New Authentication for email from September 2024

I have received an email from Microsoft headed " Update your sign-in technology before September 16th, 2024 to maintain email access."

I have an outlook account, and use a hotmail email address. Currently  I receive emails on an iPhone, iPad, iMac and Mac book. I login using my email and a password and I believe (from the information provided) that from September 2024 I need to authenticate this login with a further step in addition to an email and password. While this seems sensible and fairly straightforward, I cannot make head or tail of the instructions regarding what I need to do to change my existing set up so that it complies.

Can anyone explain what I need to do in simple terms, as I find the Microsoft instructions baffling.

I use smtp-mail.outlook.com to send auto mails from some devices like RAID controller or Printers, and since 2020-09-16 it doesn't work anymore. Are all these devices abandoned by Microsoft ? That's brutal.

Exactly. There are plenty of devices out there that send notifications using SMTP email. These devices cannot be updated to use a modern authentication method. However, I'm not aware that any of these device receive or need to "read" SMTP email. Will these device be allowed to use SMTP, presumably with an app password, to send notification emails?

I have the same issue as mg Reolink camera app can now no longer send SMTP emails notifying me of camera activities. This is a nightmare. Is there going to be a way forward?

It appears there may be a way to restore the functionality in send only devices.  It appears that, after enabling two factor authentication and enabling passwordless sign-in, you get a field to create device specific passwords for apps and devices that don’t support two factor authentication.  However, I have been unable to get it to work with a canon printer thus far.  It appears gmail, apple and a couple of others have this similar functionality.  I may have to try one of those to see if I can get it to work there, to prove out whether Canon or Microsoft is tripping up.  The printer did work prior to Microsoft closing the door on the older sign in security.

      Follow-up:

I tried a number of things to try and get the Microsoft app password method to work, on a Canon printer in my case, without success.  It is my suspicion that the new TLS security level has also been applied to the app password area, which has defeated the whole point of the app password concept.
To confirm that the device had not failed in some odd fashion, I used a email provider that was not Microsoft and also had the app password method for non two factor capable devices/older security level devices and all worked as before.  Until either app password functionality is fixed or Canon does a significant firmware update on their printers to improve the security of TLS this seems to be the only solution at this time.
