Microsoft is working on a new feature for Outlook for iOS and Android that will help users organise their contacts. According to the Microsoft 365 Admin centre, the new Contact categories feature, which was revealed at Ignite 2020, will begin rolling out later this month.

Users of the desktop version of Outlook and the online app have long been able to organise their contacts in their Microsoft account into categories or folders. This makes managing their contact lists based on those categories much easier. Currently, if a user has contacts in a subfolder in Outlook on the web, Outlook for Windows or Mac, or Outlook for iOS or Android, those contacts do not sync.

The business is adding support for syncing contact subfolders in Outlook mobile, but with a twist, based on user input. Surprisingly, this folder information will be synced as categories rather than folders in the Outlook mobile client. Users who have created contact subfolders on their mobile devices will see those subfolders as new categories. In Outlook on the Web, Outlook for Windows or Mac, the category label will match the name of the subfolder.
