Gmail less secure apps being locked down
On May 30, 2022 Google is locking down "less secure apps".
See Google's announcement here:
https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en
I'm using Outlook 2019, ad use Gmail via Outlook for 95% of my Email traffic.
I would think Microsoft is aware of this. Will using Outlook require a manual 2FA intervention every time a connection is made with Gmail?
- Anne5557788Copper ContributorPersonally I gave up on importing gmail into outlook years ago. Gmail saying they are tough on security is a joke. They pretty much ban VPNs or anything that prevents them from data mining - lol. It became a huge pain having to verify so I keep gmail separate and login from time to time. My work stuff stays separate in outlook.

be warned if you are reading this in June 2022 - there are scammers in this thread phishing / trying to engage people
they are posting email addresses
but despite reports to 'moderator' - they continue to masquerade as legitimate users
and posts (like this) warning others in the community - are being deleted....
GOOD NEWS: the solution by the REAL Stewart Goodin WORKS.
make sure you do the last step = MAIL
- and go back into settings to allow 'mail' ('windows computer') in the APPS, after you have gone through the rigmarole of 2 factor authentication.
- it will 'generate' a "16 digit passcode/password" that hyou then copy and paste into outlook (replacing your own pw)(note: don't know if you can just make up your OWN '16 dig pw' ? - who has time or the will to test?)
& in JUNE 2022 - 'allow less secure apps' is redundant/not an option
AFAIK, there's 2 solutions: Stewart's / 2 FACTOR AUTH + MAIL ON THIS PC (16 dig pw)
or
another registry something edit - even more complicated / time consuming
PLEASE send invoices for your time to MICROSOFT.
or they will never learn.

@ trying to tag MICROSOFT - but nobody home.- CPauC3Copper ContributorThanks for trying
- anthony3220Copper ContributorSince 30 May 2022, my Outlook 2021 on a Windows 10 Desktop will NOT process any of my GMAIL emails. My current system has worked flawlessly way back to Outlook 2007 without issue. If anyone has found a solution please feel free to share. Thank you.

KeithLaKey I am having the same issue. Unable to use Outlook for gmail accounts and there is no work around that I am aware of. MS needs to step up so that we can still have all of our various emails in one space. Personally I can stand using webmail after using Outlook since its inception.
- kavinaddyCopper ContributorOpen your Google Admin console (admin.google.com).
Click Security > Basic settings .
Under Less secure apps, select Go to settings for less secure apps .
In the subwindow, select the Enforce access to less secure apps for all users radio button. ...
Click the Save button.

RE: My previous post about Google shutting down "less secure apps"
Found a workaround that works.
After changing the POP and SMTP servers from POP/SMTP.GMAIL.Com to POP/SMTP.GoogleMAIL.COM without success, the article said change your Google Password to 16 characters. Mine was set to 12.
After resetting my password, Outlook began exchanging both POP and SMTP mail. However, it seems like it synced back to when the tablets came off the mountain..... At least my Outlook is working again.

- CPauC3Copper ContributorThank you again - it took awhile but I am up and working

I don't know who posted the info, but effective today, my Outlook is no longer recognized when attempting to PO Gmail.
GMAIL no longer has the "Allow Less Secure Apps" option, so the problem is permanent.
- Peter_RosnerCopper ContributorPlease see the solution that I posted on May 08th at 11:08 AM. My Outlook 2010 is still working fine, so this solution appears to work, at least for me. Disclaimer: I have ZERO tech background. Not an IT person. I use Windows 10 Home Version 21H2. The exact steps might be slightly different for other versions of Windows.

I'm using Microsoft Office Professional 2016. The 2010 solution didn't work. I've spoken to some former colleagues, and they seem to feel that going to a 16 character password would work across the board.
I've been retired from the I.T. field for 12 years, but just can't seem to get away from problem solving for friends and family.

It is the email program itself that does the authentication with a mail server.
When you setup your email program, it asks a couple questions and setups the email program to connect to an email server.
And you can go back in and tweak these settings.
In Outlook, it is under TOOLS>ACCOUNT-SETTINGS.
Google wants you to use OATH2 authentication.
OAUTH2 is available in some [but not all] versions of Microsoft Outlook:
PRODUCT: OATUH2 authentication:
Outlook 2007 Not available
Outlook 2010 Not available
Outlook 2013 Yes, but disabled by default.
Outlook 2016 Yes
Outlook 2019 Yes
Outlook 365 Yes- Peter_RosnerCopper Contributor
KevinYork I use Outlook 2010, purchased more than 10 years ago. Does this mean that it will be impossible to continue using Outlook 2010 with Gmail after May 30, 2022? Is there any work around? Thanks.
- KevinYorkCopper ContributorThat's why I came to this forum... I have the same problem and the same question.
'Googling'... I did see mentions of workarounds; but not from anyone I trust.

You wrote: "In Outlook, it is under TOOLS>ACCOUNT-SETTINGS"There is no Tools ribbon, so what do you mean? The backstage i.e. HOME?
But if one has pop3 as an account where does one set OATH2?

unless you set 16 digit passwords less secure apps are required
Hello my name is Stewart Goodin I have worked in the computer industry since 1982
I am seeing this problem, less secure apps, already cropping up with TELUS accounts.
First Less secure apps is required to be enabled for accessing GMAIL emails from OUTLOOK 2019
this applies to both IMAP and POP access to GMAIL via OUTLOOK 2019 unless you set 16 digit passwords.
So please if you are responding to questions take the time to read what people have said before you respond
I am tired of the millennial and the non millennial's attitude of not knowing what you are responding to before you answer.
here is a link to setup a 16 digit password to access your GMAIL account from OUTLOOK 2019
Sign in with App Passwords - Google Account Help
Here are step by step instructions to accomplish this
Google Help Center 2-Step Verification > Signing in with 2-Step Verification > Sign in with App Passwords
Login to GMAIL Account "myaccount.google.com"
Click on security
Enable 2 step verification, you will have to have a cell phone or access to some other device.
Now click on the back arrow, Top Left Center of Screen,
Having done that now app passwords will appear
click on app passwords
click on select app and mail
click on select device and select windows computer
click generate and a 16 digit code will appear #### #### #### #### highlight and copy to clipboard
go to Microsoft OUTLOOK and paste that code into your password line, you will be prompted for it,
click on remember and save
Your outlook will work fine from now on and you will find less secure apps is all ready disabled
I have tested it and it works fine
Sincerely

- mikec7Copper ContributorThank you stewartgoodin. Also thanks to Peter_Rosner for the clear explanation of how to enter the 16-digit password. Between the two of you, I was successfully able to overcome Google's removal of the "enable less-secure apps" setting by setting an app password. I use Outlook 365 and it's working great again.

Wow!
First, I'm NOT fearful.
Second, I AM seeking evidence or a reasonable response.
All you have provided is a conclusion with no premises, the equivalent of your "feelings" or "beliefs".
Providing useless and inaccurate info is very rude of you.
Inaccurate? Yes, for at least a decade, In all of my gmail account's settings, I have been required to set my Outlook access to "less secure sign-in technology". Soon, even this setting will not be enough.
