One Drive can't error

Hi there ,
I am writing to request assistance with my One Drive syncing issue. For the past month, my one drive has been unable to sync the files quickly and effectively.  For the last 3 month, I used modelling software that generate a large number of files on my one drive but I have not had any issue until recently. Although I am no longer using that software, my One Drive is still trying to sync the files and icon appears as follow :

I am connected to the high-speed network but it seems that my one drive can not upload files. To address this issue, I've installed the latest version of one drive, I restarted the one drive through windows command, and log out and back in for many times, but non of these steps have been effective and I still experiencing the same issue.

Could you please look into my problem and advise me with the best solution possible?
Thank you

Given that the sync problem persists even after various troubleshooting steps like reinstalling, logging in and out, and restarting the OneDrive service, there could be several possible underlying causes. Below are several steps you can take to try to resolve the issue:

    1. Check for Large File Limits or Unsupported File Types

OneDrive for Business has certain restrictions on file size and type:

    • File Size Limit: Ensure no file exceeds the 250GB limit (for the latest versions of OneDrive).
    • Unsupported Characters: Some files may fail to sync if they contain unsupported characters such as \, /, :, *, ?, <, >, |.

    2. Clear OneDrive Cache (Local Sync Issues)

If the files that are no longer in use are still being synced, it could be due to a cache issue or a backlog of pending sync operations:

    • Clear the OneDrive cache:
      1. Right-click the OneDrive icon in the system tray.
      2. Go to Settings > Account.
      3. Click Unlink this PC and follow the prompts to unlink OneDrive.
      4. Go to the OneDrive folder on your PC, back up any unsynced files, then delete the local OneDrive folder.
      5. Restart your PC and then relink OneDrive by logging back into your account.

    3. Reset OneDrive Completely

If the sync errors persist, try resetting OneDrive completely. Resetting will not delete any files, but it will remove all syncing history and settings, potentially fixing sync issues.

    1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
    2. Type the following and press Enter:

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

    1. After resetting, relaunch OneDrive by typing the following in the Run dialog:

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe

    4. Check OneDrive Sync Status (Web Version)

Sometimes, files may be stuck in sync due to cloud-side issues. To verify:

    1. Go to OneDrive for Business in a web browser and log in.
    2. Check if the problematic files are present in the web interface and whether they are marked with errors or sync issues.
    3. If the files are synced successfully on the web, try removing the problematic files from your local OneDrive folder and let the web version handle the data.

    5. Stop and Restart Sync of a Specific Folder

If certain folders are causing the issue:

    1. Open the OneDrive settings and go to the Account tab.
    2. Click on Choose folders.
    3. Uncheck the folders that seem to be causing issues or no longer need to be synced.
    4. Wait for the sync process to stop, then re-check the folders to start syncing them again.

    6. Investigate Sync Errors in the Activity Center

    1. Click the OneDrive icon in the system tray.
    2. Select Help & Settings, then click View sync problems.
    3. This will give you more detailed information on what specific files are causing issues and why.

    7. Check for File Conflicts

Files generated by modeling software could have metadata conflicts (e.g., versions, duplicate files, or read-only files). Check the affected files:

    • If there are multiple versions of a file, OneDrive might be trying to sync duplicates, causing delays.
    • Try renaming or moving problematic files to another folder to see if that frees up the sync queue.

    8. Disable Files On-Demand

OneDrive’s Files On-Demand feature can sometimes cause syncing issues, especially with large or complex file structures. You can try disabling it:

    1. Right-click the OneDrive icon in the system tray and go to Settings.
    2. Under the Settings tab, uncheck Save space and download files as you use them (Files On-Demand).
    3. This will force OneDrive to download all files locally and may resolve any issues caused by online-only files.

    9. Check Event Logs

If the issue continues, it’s a good idea to check the Windows Event Viewer for any errors related to OneDrive:

    • Press Win + R, type eventvwr, and press Enter.
    • Go to Windows Logs > Application.
    • Look for any OneDrive-related errors or warnings.

    10. Reinstall OneDrive for Business

Finally, if nothing else works, try a clean reinstall of the OneDrive for Business client:

    1. Uninstall OneDrive completely by going to Settings > Apps and selecting OneDrive.
    2. After uninstalling, manually delete any remaining OneDrive files or folders in %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive.
    3. Reinstall OneDrive by downloading the latest version from the OneDrive website.
