Depending on the volume of files and users, and the amount of switch-over downtime you can accommodate there are a couple of solutions.
One way to do it is to install OneDrive on the server, move the file share contents inside of the OneDrive folder and then (temporarily) change the file share mapping to the new location. That will allow the files to be synced to OneDrive while maintaining the file share.
OR handle it like a fileshare switchover:
Upload the files to OneDrive.
When it's done, have a forced downtime where you reupload any changed files.
Disable the fileshare as quickly as possible after either option is done.
Remember to set up a new backup process.

Thank you for your reply. A few clarifications or assistance. The file share is on its own drive (D:) with plenty of space but OneDrive was installed on the server to C: drive (Default). I assume I need to move the OneDrive location to 😧 drive to handle the space. I'm pretty sure I can figure out that part.
If I understand correctly, I should then drag the file share folders into OneDrive and change the File Share to the OneDrive Folder. This will then allow changes made locally (lan) on the file share to be replicated in the cloud (sharepoint). Can I keep this configuration such that OneDrive is now acting as a cloud backup of the server File Share. Changes made either in the cloud or on the file share will sync?
At some point we may retire the 2019 server but for the time being it would serve as a local backup to the cloud. This would provide redundancy.
Am I on solid ground here?
Thanks again.
