MS Teams Private Channels - Planner App
- Nov 06, 2019
Hi edmm94,
this is not an "issue" it is not possible to add apps to a private channel.
This is one of the restrictions we have to deal with up until now. I can not tell you if there is a plan to integrate apps later.

Hello svenseidenberg
I am considering to switch from basecamp to MS Teams. Yet, without the feature of assigning tasks to members in private channel, I cannot use MS Teams.

I agree with Benjamin980, this is going to be an essential feature for me when using MS Teams.

I found a workaround!!!This is a little much but here we go:
- Go the the Planner web app (<!!!that's important!!!)https://tasks.office.com/YOURNUMBERS .onmicrosoft.com/en-US/Home/Planner/)
- Create a new Plan. Name it whatever your structure is. Make sure your Privacy setting is "Private". Then hit create.
- You will now have the Plan you just created open. Next to the layout options (Board, Charts, Schedule) is the more link "...". Click that then in the dropdown click "Copy link to plan".
- Go to Teams. Go to the private channel you want to put the Planner in. Click the "+" and in the popup click "Website". Name the tab exactly what you named the Plan to avoid confusion. Paste your url and hit "Save". If you get an alert that the site is not loading correctly, you'll need to open the desktop app Teams and you will see a login. Log into your account and that specific plan will load. !!!The plan will only display on the desktop app Teams at the time of this post!!! [sidenote: if you have multiple departments that are private like Social Media & Graphics then you can put the plan you just created into those channels also with a new tab.]

svenseidenberg Thanks for the response! Very interesting limitation. It allows me to add Power Bi which was the most important one.
I can use a workaround and just load the planner as a URL as a website tab.
Thank you!

can you please help on how to load as a URL and can we add tasks and use all the functionalities?

edmm94 I am new to this app but liked your idea of creating a weblink to planner. for a private channel. You mentioned you had added it as a tab. I don't see that as an option but it could be because our IT group does not allow it. Just curious if I might be missing something or if I need to ask for more permission from my IT group. Thank you for any guidance and direction.

Great Idea on the Weblink.
