New Teams Desktop app no longer supports personal account

Trying to join Teams calls, I was required to update my Teams app before it would allow me to join. Once I updated the app - when I tried to open it, I was told it no longer supports personal accounts and I had to use web access. Is it true that my M365 personal account will not get me access to a desktop delivered teams experience? The web delivered experience does not give me the same benefits of notifications and joining teams calls through a link that I was able to have with Teams. I used to use the Teams desktop app daily with my personal account without any issue. Can you tell me what the new experience is suppose to be for a desktop user?
