Microsoft Teams mutes me entirely when I add another person to the meeting

This happens on the Desktop application only. Not on the browser version. The issue only occurs with the laptop's speakers/mic, not with an external headset (3.5 earbuds or USB). Any way of fixing it so I don't have to use an external headset?
