Microsoft Teams App in Task Bar shows up as white square after opening app

Using Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (installed on 8/4/2025) with Microsoft Teams:

You have Microsoft Teams version 25198.1112.3855.2900.
You've got the latest version. It was last checked on 8/15/2025.

When I launch the Microsoft Teams App it shows up as a white square icon in the task bar?

What can be done to get this icon back to what it was originally.  I've used the Microsoft Store to remove this app and install it back again, but does not work.  I've also removed the iconchache files stored in:
C:\Users\%userprofile%\AppData\Local\IconCache.db.old
C:\Users\%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\

  • Lets cover Real issues that have been around from day 1 of  Microsoft New Teams 2.x

    1) How about Microsoft App team fix the issue with Drag & Drop of a browser URL into  MS New Teams 2.x  ,  has not worked from Day 1,   BUT this did work in MS Teams Classic  just fine.  20+ Months and still NOT FIXED
    2) How about Microsoft fix the issue with MS New Teams 2.x  issues with  "Opening in New window" in a Multi-Monitor environment where the New window only opens on the Main Monitor not where teams is running.   again  this did work in Microsoft Teams Classic  just fine.  20+ Months and still NOT FIXED

    3) How about Microsoft Desktop and Mobile Teams get  their act together and work on getting the Status Message working correctly.  This is another one of those  20+ Months and nothing has been fixed.

It seems  Microsoft  does not do ANY Quality Testing of New Teams 2.x  ( OR Fixing of On going Issues )

    Once again  Microsoft  SDB's

Gmosi , apparently they published some update today, but still seeing the white square icon in the task bar so it didn't resolve it.

This is a known Windows 11/Teams icon cache bug. Try clearing and rebuilding the icon cache again, then restart Explorer or reboot. If it persists, uninstall Teams completely with the Teams uninstaller tool, reboot, and reinstall from the official Teams download.

Bonilla , as of today 2025-08-22 the icon magically works.  If I wait 1 week it will be broken again like before.

Can you put the link to download the "Teams uninstaller tool"?   If I was a betting man, I would bet that this icon will go away in 1 or 2 weeks again.

I thought since Teams is now only a Microsoft Store app, it doesn't have a "Teams uninstaller tool".  Please, please, send the link to the tool.  This isn't over.

  • Hello, did you try reset or repair?

AndresGorzelany , thank you so much for the suggested reset and repair.  I tried both of these, but it did not resolve the issue.

The first part of link you sent worked because Microsoft Teams is a Microsoft Store App:

The second part of the instructions stated to use Control Panel -> Programs -> ..., but since Microsoft Teams is no longer a Microsoft Teams Classic app, it does not exist in Control Panel.  I searched under the "M" and "T" section.

A few weeks ago, I had something similar happen with the Microsoft Store and DuckDuckGo app as shown below.

I decided to forget about it and a few weeks later around 2025-08-05 Microsoft deployed the Windows 11 Version 24H2 and after this update all the icons issues were resolved.

A week later after 24H2, now I have a white square Microsoft Teams icon.  This seems to be a common issue for Windows 11.

AndresGorzelany , would you have any other suggestions to try to help resolve the issue?

How would I open a bug ticket with Microsoft Windows 11 team to have them look into this?

Also, if I create a Teams shortcut on the desktop and right click on it to open, the icon is white again:
