Is Microsoft Teams a good Intranet?

Teams can work really well as the front door to an intranet, but I wouldn’t treat Teams itself as the intranet.

The way I’ve seen it work best is to keep SharePoint as the actual content layer and use Teams as the place people access it from. So policies, forms, department pages, onboarding resources, etc. live in structured SharePoint sites, then you surface the important stuff inside Teams through tabs, pinned apps, Viva Connections, or relevant channels.

The biggest mistake is just moving all the existing clutter into Teams. If people still have to guess which channel, folder, or site something lives in, you haven’t really solved the problem.

I’d also separate “company information” from “employee workflows.” Things like policies and resources fit nicely into SharePoint/Viva. There are also pretty capable intranet tools built into HR software in that you can connect into Teams that can help bring that intranet, company social media and resource hub concept into Teams. I know Teamflect is a good one but Im sure there are others.

So yes, Teams is a good starting point and a good interface for the intranet, but you’ll still need some structure underneath it.
