Custom backgrounds?
- Mar 23, 2020No, it is not rolled out yet and no public ETA.
No problem. Their tiered rollout approach is to limit any issues with the updates, and to also not overwhelm their support staff. During the COVID-19 crisis and increased demands, they may also take a bit longer than usual.
Brad Groux That's completely understandable. Even with very robust testing, bugs will still get through. There's probably nothing quite like rolling out to the end user to help find any issues lurking under the surface. With any luck, those issues can be addressed before the next group gets the update (or at least listed as known issues to reduce the amount of bug reports they get for a known issue that is being addressed).

AtanasioG Well as I'm part of the IT group I am totally sure thats not hapenning 😃
Finally I manage to do it, but only like "forcing" the app, hopefully Microsoft solve this problem making this function accesible for the users.
Thanks for you time!

Tony_Novelli It was really helpfull, looks like the app have some loops, so it's like forcing the backgrounds to appear.
I finally made it by moving images like you told me, but again, with other users same procedure doesn't work at first.
Hopefully Microsoft solve this making the full implementation.
Thanks!

Yuritzin_Aguirre Greetings. With the excellent support here I do have mine working, though I can't speak for my methodology for getting there! For reference, I am working from home, and opting to use my Mac laptop instead of the work machine for productivity reasons. I am accessing my work Microsoft accounts, though IT involvement is limited to nonexistent in my situation.
My guess is that once I added the "Backgrounds" folder to the Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams folder, and populated it with some imagery, and logged out/in and restarted the app, that the program created the Uploads folder and added the stock imagery with the app. As I was unclear how to apply these backgrounds for a while, I added more files and moved everything into the uploads folder. When I figure out in the interface how to apply the backgrounds (as stated above - following the three dots while in the vidchat window), I realized the stock images weren't showing when placed in the uploads folder. When I put them back into Backgrounds, everything worked, and the app sees both the Backgrounds and Uploads folder contents and will apply them.
Hope this helps!

greetings! Sorry, maybe your IT is blocking it? I am not too sure why. As I mentioned previously. I too am new to this, I recently rolled out TEAMS in my ORG about 2 months ago, still in the learning curve. One one of your post, you asked, how it works for Mac, unfortunately I am not a Mac user, so I wouldn't be able to assist.
Best,
-Gio
- Yuritzin_AguirreApr 18, 2020Copper ContributorHeIlo,
I'll try il but does't work, I added a new folder for "Uploads" but does't work eigther.
Thanks! - AtanasioGApr 16, 2020Copper Contributor
you're very welcome, I too am sort of new to Teams, I recently upgraded our ORG from Skype for Business to Teams. there are some good this about it, but it lacks a lot.. hopefully MS will get it all worked out.
regarding the images showing backwards, that is normal, the other end will see it correctly. if you flip it, then the people see you will see your background the way that you are currently seeing it now.
hope that makes sense.

AtanasioG Thanks so much for your time. I've gotten it to work, though it wasn't a direct route for me. I first moved ALL the files from the Backgrounds folder into the uploads subfolder (which was empty). Then I tried to fire up a meeting, though being a novice, the easiest thing for me to do was to just create a team with no other members. I fired up a video chat and the program quit a couple of times. I moved the files that had been in stalled by the program *back into the backgrounds folder and things went much better, with the files accessible from both folders. I did notice though the images are reversed when displayed... at least in my one-person meetings. I guess I'll have to flip them in photoshop for this purpose.
You've been tremendously helpful, and I very much appreciate it. Soon I'll marshall my strength and go look for the OneDrive group... hoo boy I have some issues there. Thank you again.

You will need to place your custom backgrounds in the Uploads folder %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds\Uploads. i guess that's a preset in the Teams application for any non-Teams files, originally I did place my files in the background folder and they were not displaying in Teams.
Also, you don't need to call anyone; what i do is, I simply create a Teams Meeting, I join it then i click on the 3 dots in the menu, select "show background effects", and right there, i can preview all my backgrounds
. When I am done, i simply end the meeting..
Hope this helps

AtanasioG Thank you for your reply. So I just did a test call with a workmate and that menu DID show up in the options area, though the screen options were pre-loaded into the folder I created and did not include ones I previously populated there. I didn't want to bother my co-worker too long so there might have been an option to add the screens zoom-style, but I didn't see it, and I don't see any options to preview any of this outside of actually being in a video chat.

Greetings, sorry for the late reply. unfortunately I do not know why you you are unable to see the directory. it may be possible that your IT dept could be blocking it? not too sure. do you see this, when you are on a video call? click on the 3 dots to see the sub-menu.

AtanasioG I needed to create a folder at that path, populated it, and then restarted Teams in the hopes it would enable something akin to the "advanced" options of the Windows counterpart - even after installing latest update this morning I'm not finding settings to include background effects.

i think my previous reply i did a typo. it should be:
/users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Backgrounds/Uploads

what I found after digging around, some people have posted the following:
1280 x 720 or 1600 x 1200
for my Org, we chose a background, then I wrote a quick script, saved it in my OneDrive, shared it throughout my ORG, my end-users download the folder and double click on the background.bat file and it saves the image directly in the appropriate location. Simple and easy.. 🙂

i'm not a Mac person, but after doing some research, i believe it is located here:
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Backgrounds

AtanasioG do you know the path for Mac?

Hello!
yes MS deployed the background in Teams. if you want to upload custom backgrounds, simply upload them into the UPLOADS folder located here %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds
