The types of files that can be created in Copilot Chat, Copilot in Word, and PowerPoint.
- Apr 15, 2025
frankfalveyThe first sentence of your answer talks about document creation, but then your second sentence talks about uploading files. Just checking you understand the query here - requesting Copilot Chat (Work/Web) create files that you can download?
I've found no evidence so far that Microsoft 'officially' support document creation in Copilot Chat, however it does do it. It's been a bit hit and miss, sometimes blocking the download due to it being an 'external site', but seems to be okay now.
YurinaH, based on my testing, both Copilot Chat 'Web' and Copilot Chat 'Work' successfully created all 4 types - Word (docx), PowerPoint (pptx), Excel (xlsx), text (txt).
For creating files in Word and PowerPoint, it looks like you're trying to use the Copilot sidebar. It's not supported there.
However, when opening a blank Word document, you'll see Copilot prompts you to "Describe what you'd like to write":
Entering text in there will create the Word document using Copilot.
In PowerPoint, on a blank presentation, there's a small Copilot button in the top left of the slide which when you click you get an option to "Create a presentation":
Similarly, describe what you want and it will create it.
Thanks for sharing your test results it's a valuable question, especially as Microsoft Copilot continues to evolve across different platforms.
Based on current functionality as of early 2025, here’s a quick summary of what file types can be created directly from each Copilot experience:
Copilot Chat Web
File Creation: Not currently designed to create files like Word docs or PowerPoint decks directly. You can generate content (e.g., text, summaries, outlines) which you can then manually copy into other apps.
Output Style: Primarily conversational responses. No native file export options like .docx or .pptx yet.
Note: This differs from Copilot for Microsoft 365 Work, which is more deeply integrated.
Copilot in Word Microsoft 365 Work Account
Creates: .docx
Functionality: Can generate new Word documents, edit existing ones, rewrite, summarize, and format content using natural language.
Copilot in PowerPoint in Microsoft 365 Work Account
Creates: .pptx
Functionality: Can build entire presentations, create slides from prompts or Word documents, adjust tone, layout, and design all within the app.

Thank you for your answer!
I tested again, and I was able to create files (Word, PPT, Excel) in both Copilot Chat Web and Work, as shown in the attached image.
You mentioned that Copilot Chat doesn't support direct document creation. Is this feature now available?
*When I opened the link in the image, the new document with contents Copilot created opened properly- frankfalveyApr 14, 2025MCT
Yes, Copilot Chat supports direct document creation! You can upload files directly into the chat and ask Copilot to summarize, analyze, or suggest improvements for documents like Word files, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentation, Its a moving target, more stuff added every day.
