Word keeps adding a grey 'comment' area
I am running MS Word 16.85.2 on a Mac Air with OS Sonoma.
Word keeps adding a vertical grey area on the righthand side for tracking comments. It covers about one-third of the page area. I never use it. It is very annoying. I delete it every time I use the program, but it reappears whenever I open a file again.
How can I stop Word from adding this?
I have never had this problem before.
Thanks
John
Try this:
- Open your document in Microsoft Word.
- Go to the “Review” tab at the top.
- In the “Comments” section, select the “Show Markup” dropdown menu.
- Uncheck the “Comments” option to hide all comments in your document.
- To hide individual comments, click on each and select “Delete Comment.”

Thanks for this. My Review tab does not have a menu with Comments or Show Markup. The Review tab has a Tracking Menu and I have unchecked the 'comments' box but I am unable to save the change
Does the document contain comments and/or tracked changes? To permanently get rid of the Markup area you will have to delete all comments and then accept (or reject) all changes. You would also want to turn off the tracking.
- JohnHowkinsCopper ContributorI have discovered and deleted one comment and unticked all the boxes. I saved the changes. Then I printed a sample page. The grey vertical strip reappeared. Is there a way to opt out of the grey area by default and then opt in when I want It?
You can choose to display revisions inline. On the Review tab, click Show Markup (in the Tracking group), click Balloons and finally click Show All Revisions Inline.
You may still see the Markup area when you preview or print a document which contains comments.
