With no active user mailboxes remaining on-prem how can I reduce Exchange memory footprint?

I still have some mailboxes left on-prem but they are all of former employees. I'm curious if there are some ways I can safely reduce the memory footprint of my Exchange VM. I have a single Exchange server and about 20 mailboxes. I don't use IMAP and I don't use POP.

Would it be safe to turn off any of the following Automatic services?

  • Microsoft Exchange IMAP4
  • Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 Backend
  • Microsoft Exchange Search
  • Microsoft Exchange Search Host Controller

I realize this might not do much for memory usage.

Why not just export the mailboxes to .pst files an take down the server. If you need access to the data in the mailboxes for historical reasons at all times you could create shared mailboxes online and import the data into them.

I don't mean to Hijack the thread, but also, does anyone know if MS is working on a path to have a AAD Connected Office 365 environment that does not require an on premise exchange server?

Robert Gøransson Hi, there is no need for an OnPrem Exchange to use AAD Connect. The service can be installed on any domain joined server or if you only have 1 AD server it can be installed on that to.
