Upgrading from Personal to Family

The support in have read says to upgrade from Personal to Family I buy the new plan and any remaining subscription will be converted to the Family plan but I will lose some of the remaining time.

I have 18 months to go on my Personal plan so does that mean if I buy a year of Family now I will be charged the full yearly price for 12 months then have the remainder of the Personal plan added so my next yearly subscription payment would be in about 2 years?

Also does anyone know how the remaining conversation works and how much I would get for my 18 months of Personal?

When you upgrade from a Microsoft 365 Personal plan to a Family plan, your remaining subscription time is converted based on Microsoft's conversion rate.

Here’s what you need to know about the process:

    1. How the Upgrade and Conversion Works:

    • Purchase of New Plan: When you buy the Family plan, Microsoft converts the remaining time on your Personal subscription to Family plan time at a reduced rate.
    • Conversion Rate: The conversion rate determines how much of your existing subscription will carry over to the new plan. The exact rate can vary, but it generally reduces the remaining time due to the higher cost and benefits of the Family plan.
    • Immediate Activation: Once you purchase the Family plan, it takes effect immediately, and your remaining Personal subscription is converted accordingly.
    •

    2. Cost Implications:

    • Full Charge for Family Plan: Yes, when you buy the new Family plan, you will be charged the full price for the 12-month subscription at the time of purchase.
    • Next Renewal Date: After the conversion, your new renewal date would be calculated based on how much time you have after the conversion. For example, if you add a year of Family and convert your 18 months of Personal, you will see an extension of your Family plan beyond 12 months, but not for the full remaining 18 months of the Personal plan.

    3.  Example of Conversion:

    • Conversion Rate Estimate: While the exact conversion rate isn’t always publicly detailed, it is roughly proportional to the cost difference between the two plans. Typically, one month of Microsoft 365 Personal might convert to approximately 0.67 months of Microsoft 365 Family.
    • Your Case:
      • You have 18 months left on your Personal plan.
      • When you purchase a 12-month Family plan, your 18 months will be converted based on the rate (e.g., 0.67 conversion rate).
      • This would mean that your 18 months of Personal might convert to approximately 12 months of Family.
      • The total subscription time for Family would then be 24 months (the 12 months from the new plan + approximately 12 converted months).

    4. How to Check the Conversion Details:

    • Microsoft provides a detailed breakdown of how your time will convert when you initiate the upgrade process. You can begin the upgrade and check the specifics without finalizing the purchase until you are satisfied with the terms.

    5. Things to Consider:

    • Loss of Time: Yes, you will lose some of the remaining subscription time due to the conversion.
    • Check Support for Confirmation: For the most accurate and current information on conversion rates and how much time you’ll retain, it’s best to check with Microsoft 365 Support or view the conversion policy during the upgrade process.

    Summary:

If you have 18 months of Personal remaining and buy a 12-month Family plan, you will pay for the full Family plan, and your 18 months of Personal will be converted to a reduced amount of Family time. The next payment will be due in about 2 years after conversion, depending on the exact conversion rate Microsoft applies at the time.

  • Yes, you're correct, when you upgrade from a Microsoft 365 Personal plan to a Family plan, you will be charged the full yearly price for the Family plan. However, the remaining time on your Personal plan will be converted and added to your new Family plan.
