Remote (hybrid) mailbox moves from Exchange 2007 to Office 365

I have an Exchange 2007 organization with about 5000 users for which I want to set up an Exchange hybrid environment and move mailboxes in batches to Office 365. I know it is possible to add one or more Exchange 2013 servers and set up a hybrid environment. I have the below questions.

1. Can I migrate mailboxes (remote mailbox moves) directly from Exchange 2007 without first migrating them to any databases on Exchange 2013 servers?

2. If yes, what is the user experience for such mailbox moves from Exchange 2007 to Exchange Online? Are they online moves i.e., can the users continue to work while the moves happen? Will Outlook reconfigure itself automatically?

3. Finally, do you see any reason at all for which I might need to consider moving the mailboxes to Exchange 2013 first, before moving them to Exchange Online?

Thanks

  • Hi Salar,

I Advice has Jonathan to see the advisor, you have the articles that Edwin show.

And has Juan Carlos said also correct.

    1. Yes, Install Exchange 2013 Hybrid on the infrastructure, you will need at least Ex 2007 SP3.

    2. Yes, Is the same experience to the end uses like you change now with Exchange 2007 from a database to another database. "Outlook will ask to the uses close and to Reopen"

I advise that you create all scenario and test it, create a test user, move mailbox, take screenshoots to document and then communicate to the end users what are going to happen and how.

The communication is very important and tests also.

    3. You do not need to move mailboxes to 2013, do all the tests before take your conclusions

We are here to help if you have any other subject on this or other types of migrations.

  • 1.- Yes, it's possible but bear in mind that you have a high number of MailBoxes to move what makes advisable to set up a Exchange Server 2013 Hybrid environment
    2. Yes, users can work...I currently have a project where we are moving directly from Exchange 2007 to EXO, but the number of MailBoxes to move is only 90 that's what I said that I think here you should go for the Exchange 2013 Hybrid
    3. Yes, as I said before, you have a high number of MailBoxes to move what makes advisable to go for the Hybrid setup
