Multi-column layout for the pages is in the Pages roadmap. Alyssa Danesh can provide more information if any on that. Once that is available, you will get support in the SharePoint Framework as well.

So Alyssa Danesh, can you tell us more about the Roadmap details for modern pages? We're planning a lightwight team Intranet during Q1-17 based on Modern SPO and SPFx for a customer. And they're longing for a Xmas gift of knowing when it going to be... ;-)
