Your email system is asking for some authentication, please see the logs on your on-premises to help you what is happening.
Yes but there is no log on the on-premise mail server. The Exchange online connector is well validated. For me, online user could use this connector to send mail but it seems like it was not used

See the tracking on Office 365 to see if it has used the Connector, in Exchange Admin Center, Mail Flow, and Message Trace.
