Policy Management Question: Deploying office templates using Enterprise Templates Path setting?

I know this is possible with a UNC path and Group Policy, but does it work the same way if I were to put it in a publicly available url or sharepoint library? What's best practice?

I'd like to have all of my users have corporate templates available to them regardless of the device (personal or company owned). Thanks
