Onedrive for Business opening file error
- Aug 04, 2017Sometimes SharePoint gets confused. When you open a document in a library, SharePoint (behind the scenes for OneDrive) takes out a lock on the document to stop anyone else changing it while you are editing the file. When you close the file, the lock is removed. But sometimes it isn't and you get that error... but it should go away in 10m or so when the lock expires.
I had the same yesterday.
What I realised had happened was that I had a local instance of a file open in Word but then linked it to OneNote using Linked Notes feature - When I clicked a header in the linked note it must have connected to the cloud/app version of OneNote and then form there opened the Word file in Office 365 - ultimately therefore I was the other person editing my own file...
Not entirely sure what the relationship between One Note app and OneNote Application is but lines are a little blurred and there are several dependencies that seem to confuse things.
I suspect several other areas of Office are blurring the local and cloud boundaries and causing this issue. Risk I suppose is a risk of losing information depending on which version of the file synchronises first. Would be good to understand it though so will try and recreate the scenario.
