Multi Org Forest - Office 365 Migration

Hi Experts,

We are in scenario of Migrating Multi Forest AD and Office 365 Migration, Below are our scenarios:

Background:

Source of AD Users and Exchange Mailbox - Forest B

Source Exchange Server - Exchange 2013 SP1

Target for AD Users - Forest A

Target for Exchange Mailboxes - Office 365

What is the recommended way by Microsoft?

Scenarios: 1 - (Is it possible)

1. Run AADConnect on Forest B to sync Forest B accounts to Office 365 tenants

2. Migrate Exchange Mailboxes from forest B to Office 365 using Hybrid Configuration Wizard

3. Migrate AD account from Forest B to Forest A

4. Is it possible to connect the migrated AD (Forest A) account to migrated office 365 mailbox

If yes, Please provide the steps:

Scenarios: 2

1. Migrate AD account from Forest B to Forest A

2. Once the AD account is migrated to Forest A, convert the mailboxes to Linked Mailbox

3. Run AADConnect on Forest A to sync migrated accounts to Office 365 tenants

4. Migrate Exchange Linked Mailboxes from forest B to Office 365 using Hybrid Configuration Wizard

5. What are the pros and cons?

Do we have any other scenarios, through which we can achieve the requirements.

  • Hi Akhtar,

If your users' UPNs and email addresses won't change during the AD forest migration, I believe the option 1 would be the most easiest.

First let AD accounts in forest B to be synced to O365 and migrate your mailboxes as well. Then properly disconnect the AD sync. Perform the AD forest migration and deploy AD sync on new forest.

AAD Connect tool will do a soft-match with cloud users during the synchronization process (assuming UPN / email address hasn't changed) and bind them with the corresponding AD account in forest A.
