Microsoft Plans for More Intelligent Versioning for SharePoint Online Document Libraries
SharePoint Online makes extensive use of file versioning. Coming in November 2023, we will see SharePoint Intelligent Versioning based on usage and the probability that a version will be needed for a restore. The new intelligent mechanism will replace the current method of setting a fixed version count for document libraries. Sites that need fixed version counts can continue, but SharePoint intelligent versioning should become the default when the feature reaches general availability in early 2024.

- Jason_Brownhill_NTTCopper ContributorHi Tony,
We're into mid-April 2024 - any idea where this is in the planning for general release?
Thanks,
Jason.- Jason_Brownhill_NTTCopper ContributorChecked the roadmap and now schedule for preview in May - I kind of need this now for a particular client...
- I have no idea what's happening here. Maybe Microsoft will say something at the M365 conference at the end of the month.
- SharePoint Online Intelligent Versioning Rolling Out The deployment of intelligent versioning to SharePoint Online worldwide is proceeding. Intelligent versioning is all about reducing the amount of storage quota consumed by file edits. It's a great idea, but it has one downside for many Microsoft 365 tenants: retention policies and labels stop SharePoint removing unwanted versions. TonyRedmondKindly suggest if it is mandatory to enable Intelligent versioning at tenant level so that same can be enabled further at Site level?
If you don't enable intelligent versioning for a tenant, you can't enable it for a site.
