Issues with with adding shared mailbox
Hi everyone,
I have a O365 business where I have added 2 domains (maxie.dk and pitley.com). My single user jm@maxie.dk has had several aliasses linked to the user including jm@pitley.com.
Now I wanted to get jm@pitley.com as a shared mailbox so I deleted the alias and tried to create the shared mailbox, but I keep getting an error:
The proxy address "SMTP:jm@maxie.dk" is already being used by the proxy addresses or LegacyExchangeDN. Please choose another proxy address.
Note that the error is pointed at jm@maxie.dk and not jm@pitley.com which is the shared mailbox e-mail that I am trying to add.
I deleted the alias 2 days ago and have tried since (thought maybe it was a caching issue), but the problem persists.
I hope someone can help me on the way here.
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Jens Madsen

Hi Jens,
Can you see this article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3042584/-proxy-address-address-is-already-being-used-error-message-in-exchange-online
Have you tried to create the shared mailbox by powershell ?

Hi Nuno,
Thanks for your reply.
I have not tried Powershell as I have no experience with it (and also I am working in Apple OS X). I have no Exchange experience, but if this solves the problem I will try and connect to it and try to figure it out.

Being on Mac does make it more tricky, if you're involved in Office 365 admin you need access to PowerShell sooner or later. For Macs, having a Windows VM (Parallels/VMware/VirtualBox) or Bootcamp would be easiest assuming there are no accessible Windows PCs/servers. This is a good page to get started - PowerShell for Office 365 administrators and here. Good luck anyway.
