How to reset your password when there is no admin?

I work at my college's IT department and a common problem is students getting locked out of their Microsoft accounts because they forgot their password and they get access programs like Microsoft Word. They all signed up for the free student version but they made it a work account instead of a personal one. The college does not manage these accounts, but when students try to reset their password it tells them to contact the IT department at the college and we can't help them. They are seemingly unable to reset their password. Is there any other way to reset their password or to change their account to a personal one?
