Helping users navigate the rebrand to the "Microsoft 365 Copilot" App
Just had this experience today. I wanted to download the teams app, but office.com just gives me Copilot. So I told Copilot what I thought of that (and of course it agreed with me), and it helped me draft a message to Microsoft support. I'll just post it here hoping they'll read it, since Copilot informed me they don't have a public email address for feedback or product suggestions:
Hello Microsoft Teams team,
I’m a user who often visits office.com to retrieve direct installers (e.g., Teams). Recently, I’m being routed into chatbot-guided flows instead of a straightforward download link.
While I see the value of guided support for many users, a chatbot is resource-intensive compared to a static page. That raises environmental concerns: increased compute and cooling loads in data centers, with societal externalities that aren’t directly borne by the vendor.
Requests:
- Please provide a clearly visible “Direct download” option next to chatbot flows (Windows/macOS).
- Publish an energy/compute efficiency rationale for chatbot-vs-static use cases, with transparent environmental metrics.
- Offer a tenant or user preference to default to static pages when appropriate (e.g., “I’m an advanced user—show direct links”).
- Document a low-compute path for common tasks (downloads, account sign-in, link association) that avoids unnecessary interactions.
This dual-path approach (guided + static) would reduce environmental impact, respect user choice, and still meet support goals.
