Helping my younger sibling stay on track with summer assignments in Word

Hi! My younger brother is really struggling with summer assignments this year. He’s supposed to write a few essays using Microsoft Word, but writing has never been his strong suit. We’ve tried using templates and even OneNote to organize ideas, but he still feels overwhelmed and stuck. I’ve been helping him as much as I can, but I’m wondering if there’s a better way to support him. Has anyone else had this kind of experience? What tools or approaches worked for you to help a younger student write better, especially when motivation is low?

You may want to try Copilot in Word. He can have conversations with Copilot to help him be organized, create outlines, and even help with grammar. I'm not advocating that Copilot create the assignments for him, but act more as a coach. Additionally, you might want to use the Copilot Writing Coach, available in the Microsoft 365 Copilot App.

  • How about this:

    • Microsoft Word Read Aloud & Dictation: Let him say his thoughts instead of writing them out—sometimes it's easier to speak than to type. Word's Dictate feature can turn speech into text, and Read Aloud helps him hear what he’s written for easier editing.
    • Copilot in Word: If you have access to the AI features in Microsoft 365, Copilot can help generate drafts, reword sentences, or even propose outlines. It’s like having a brainstorming buddy built into Word.
    • Focus Mode & Immersive Reader: These features minimize distractions and help him concentrate on one chunk of text at a time.
