Email settings conflict in Exchange Online

When a member of staff leaves our company, our process involves the following:

  1. Enable an automatic reply on the user's mailbox
  2. Forward incoming emails to another member of staff

The problem is that the forwarding of emails stops the automatic reply from working, even when the option to send a copy of the message to the original mailbox is enabled.

  • That's the expected behavior. If you want both, use an Inbox rule for the OOO reply. Or setup a transport rule to cc/bcc the email to other recipients.

Good to know there's a workaround, but that's a messy configuration for settings that should be able to just work together.

Forwarding happens before the message hits the mailbox, there is no way for them to work together.
