Change Sharepoint 365 URL to an individual one

Hello,

we have a customer working with Sharepoint on Microsoft 365 with a Microsoft 365 Business Standard license under the standard URL <customertenant>.sharepoint.com

Our customer does not like the name of the <customertenant> so here is my question:

Can we rename this into something like sharepoint.<customerdomain>.com ?

Does anybody has experience with this?

Thank you all,

Stefan

Yes and thanks! An alternative could be a new subdomain with onmicrosoft.com -> https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/change-your-sharepoint-domain-name

A tenant is limited to 5 individual subdomains, if available.

Thanks Vasil for your valuable information! We will go ahead testing it in this direction.

The other way could be to register a <NewSubdomain>.sharepoint.com - this should work without adding a new tenant, see here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/change-your-sharepoint-domain-name

This is how Microsoft deals with new subdomains: "You're limited to five onmicrosoft.com domains, and currently they can't be deleted once they're created."

Sure, but your original ask was about a sharepoint.<customerdomain>.com format.

You are totally right, and this will be the preferred solution. Thank you for your expertise!

  • No, you cannot. What you can do is create a redirect via Azure web app/IIS/any other web server. Do note that simple CNAME record for sharepoint.<customerdomain>.com pointing to the <customertenant>.sharepoint.com will not suffice, due to the different domain and the certificate.
