We received a free grant from the Microsoft for Nonprofits program (Business Basic), but Microsoft is still attempting to charge SAR 859.99 (approx. $229) from our card, even though the subscription page itself shows Unit price: Free. Why are we being asked to pay if this is a grant?

If the subscription clearly shows Unit price: Free, check whether the nonprofit grant is applied to the same tenant and subscription linked to the card.
Also check for old paid licenses, add-ons, or a pending invoice. If everything is free, contact Microsoft billing support with ss of the free pricing and attempted charge so they can identify wht is generating it.
I'm not too sure but I think even when a Microsoft 365 nonprofit grant shows "Free", Microsoft may place a temporary authorization or attempt to validate the payment method on file.
If an actual charge is being processed instead of a verification hold, it's worth contacting Microsoft Nonprofit Support, as the granted licenses shouldn't incur subscription fees.
