User logon name (pre Windows 2000)

Hi,

Yesterday we had a weird problem with a client. The client has 3 Exchange 2019 servers DAG on-premises. Latest CU13 with security updates up to October. The November security has not been installed yet.

One user has a username truncated by one letter for the User logon name (pre Windows 2000).

Yesterday, Outlook suddenly kept asking for a username and password all the time. We figured out that we needed to use the exact username (pre Windows Windows 2000).

However, it was working fine all the time until yesterday. OWA and mobile work with a long user name. I understand Outlook use MAPI to connect.

Does Outlook MAPI use the pre Windows 2000 user name?

Thanks,

Connections to on-prem Exchange servers authenticate using AD credentials, so that could be the domain\samAccountName or UPN. The samAccountName does have restrictions (20 characters) so may be truncated. The other non-truncated username you mention is the prefix for the UPN, but requires the domain suffix to be a relevant account name when using it for authentication
  • Hello,

Since Monday (13th Nov 2023), we've been experiencing Outlook 2019 password prompts. We are running a hybrid environment with 6x Exchange 2013 servers, we haven't updated our Exchange servers recently and have raised an issue with Microsoft.

When we look at the Connection Status dialog, from the systray, we can see that some of the connections to shared mailboxes on Exchange 365 are showing disconnected. If we cancel the dialogue and send/receive, the issue resolves again for a period of time (hour or so).

Are you having no service at all with these users?

    Steven
