Connections to on-prem Exchange servers authenticate using AD credentials, so that could be the domain\samAccountName or UPN. The samAccountName does have restrictions (20 characters) so may be truncated. The other non-truncated username you mention is the prefix for the UPN, but requires the domain suffix to be a relevant account name when using it for authentication
