But I'm not sure why the combined cells that span two columns are the source of this problem. It's easier to read the content of the list that way.
How can I manually override the reference that Excel created?
Could you please clarify? Or should someone else?

eladhtn Just go in to the conditional formatting window and type the correct reference spanning only one column.
