When I click on a cell formatted to telephone numbers it loses the formatting in Formula Bar?

I formatted telephone numbers on my spreadsheet to this format ex. (555) 555-5555.  When I click on a cell with the telephone number it loses its format in the formula bar.  Can someone please help m...
