What formula do you use to automatically automatically number a form?

I am building a Purchase request form in Excel. I would like to keep track of the forms by numbering them as they are generated and then having the numbers automatically enter in a list with the date that it was issued. How do you set up a form to automatically advance to the next number in the sequence when it is printed?
