Using Scan function with Oddly shaped arrays

Many thanks PeterBartholomew1 djclements Patrick2788 . I'm trying to wrap my head around thunks. I a baby step would be to create padded zeros in the triangle shape but am not getting the right result. See below. Any suggestions on how to fix it?
