table references for drop down

I have created table1 on tab Empl By Dept with headers for Employee, supervisor and dept.  I am using a drop down list on another tab of the same workbook to select data from this table. Per excel he...

when I type =table1[employee] in the source for the drop down. It highlights all of my employees in the table with the dotted lines, but when I click ok on the drop down panel, I get err about trying to create a function.
