Sorting data with links
I have a list of data where some cells contains links to other cells withing the data. When I try to sort it the rows the data is moved around but the row numbers keeps their numbers. This means that data that was in cell B5 suddenly might be in B10. Usually Excel updates the links accordingly, (i.e. the cell that linked to B5 before would now have linked to B10) but today I noticed that the links did not update while sorting. Does anybody knows if this is a new behaviour, or have I just not noticed this particular behaviour when sorting before?
- Hi Eric
I think you've just noticed it. As far as I know the references to cells haven't ever changed when those referenced cells are in a list that you then sort.My $0.02
In more general, the reference is a formula. Sorting the range with formulas is equivalent of moving such formulas from one cell to another. If in C10 is the reference or any other formula with reference on B10, we may copy B10:C10 and paste it into B5:C5 - effect will be the same as after the sorting of B5:C10 if value from B10 appears on B5 place.
For my knowledge there is nothing new in such behaviour, it's the same for years if not for entire history.
