sliding columns within a row
I'm trying to slide columns within an individual row so that multiple cells fit beneath a single sell above it. I keep getting this hand icon that won't let me grab and slide the cell like you're able to grab and slide the width of the entire column at the . I'm running the 2010 version

To my knowledge, it's impossible to widen (resize) one single cell by dragging it's border, like when you resize a column. What you may do, however, is MERGE two or more cells. For instance, if you want a text in B2 to center above cells C2:C4, you first select B2:B4 and then press the relevant "merge" icon in the Home ribbon, like in the picture below.
