simple adding

In previous versions of Excel (and every other spreadsheet I've ever used) I've been able to add the values in individual cells just by clicking on them. I didn't have to type a + sign. I just typed an = in a cell where I wanted the result and clicked cells all over the spreadsheet. Each cell would be added to the calculation string with a + between each one. That doesn't seem to work anymore in version 16.9 on either my MacBook Pro or iMac. I have to type a + every time...which is a pain!

 

Is there a setting for this somewhere?
