Show changes made in a linked document

Hello,

I have two documents that need to be used by different departments. I have linked the cells but I need for the linked documents to highlight any changes made in the source document. I've tried tracking changes but this doesn't work and just returns the message no changes made.

Is this something I can do in excel?
