Page up or down jumps to cell in top row
This is a new problem for me. and I am battling when scrolling down in worksheets. (Office 2016)
Using page down the active cell automatically jumps to the top row, so when I start using the arrow key, I am at the top of the page again.
I have repaired and reinstalled excel with no luck. It is probably just a small setting, but I'm stuck.
I've checked scroll lock and i use freeze panes
Can anybody please help?
- ChrisJones2112Copper ContributorI'm still having this. In the last post somebody mentions it having gone away with the 2211 release, though I'm stuck on 2202 because my organization manages updates and they're very very slow about approving and pushing any updates. This started without me having gotten an update. One day it was working fine, the next it wasn't. Can confirm that unfreezing and refreezing panes does fix it for a while. I've also found exactly how I can consistently break it again. Just moving the cellpointer somewhere outside of the frozen panes will start this again. Suppose I've frozen row 1 and column A so that the first cell in the frozen range is B2, moving anywhere in column A or row 1 will make it start jumping to the top again when paging. I guess I'm stuck with this until my organization finally gets me to a fixed version. I'd love to know why it worked one day and started breaking the next with no software update having happened. There must have been something that changed in my configuration.

I have been having the same problem for months thinking it's just me, but glad there is a discussion about it and offering some solutions. I tried the unfreezing panes, but that can be challenging when you are looking at records hundreds of rows down.
I tried the split screen and it appears to be a good work around till Microsoft fixes this glitch, enabling you to see the headers and far left columns while scrolling or paging down.
- dmamo1024Copper ContributorSame thing is happening with me. I need this fixed asap.
- AM22333Copper ContributorPlease fix this.
- kirkjtCopper ContributorThis only works for me temporarily.

I have found that this generally only occurs when I have panes frozen. I found unfreezing and re-freezing panes temporarily works (need to further test this to ensure it's a more permanent solution). For now I am doing this in every file I run into this problem, and while the file remains open it seems to be working.
Hoping a more permanent solution is released.

Yeah, I found that works for about 5 seconds for me. Once my active cell cursor interacts with the rows or columns frozen, the work around stops functioning again and the behavior persists.

Angry_Analyst : Unfreeze and re-freeze the panes.

ShelaghW Do we have any new work arounds for this? I just started experiencing the same issue. Need help.

ShelaghW Hey everyone - I FOUND A SOLUTION!!! I had recently started using a feature called "text cursor indicator". It is under Settings->Ease of Access->Text Cursor. It's a neat feature that allows you to turn on a cursor indicator so it is easier to find where your cursor currently is. The indicator size and color can be customized as well. It's especially useful when editing Word documents. Anyway, I had the indicator turned on, and that's when I started having this Excel problem. When I turned it back off and restarted my machine, the problem went away!!

Todd_Clark, In your Windows Tool Bar Search, simply type 'Text cursor'. It will take you to the Settings app in the area discussed in this thread.

jmwilliams that didn't work for me.
The work around is to customize your toolbar to include Freeze Panes.
Freeze Panes also Unfreezes panes so its only the one button.
Unfreeze and page down works fine. Do what you have to do then freeze stuff again.

For me, the issue is that this is a program bug that should be fixed. It is a pain to be several screens down and have to turn off freeze panes to keep the cursor acting normally, then scroll back to the top to reset the freeze panes then scroll back down. Is there any way to get Microsoft engineers fixing this bug that they recently added to Excel?
- mikegoodeCopper Contributorjmwilliams - thanks so much! I turned on this feature as well a few weeks ago and, while it's very helpful, it's not worth the pains it causes in Excel. Now, hopefully, MS will fix this bug.
- ChemcatsCopper ContributorI've sent information on this to Microsoft (including the link to this Tech Community post) through Excel Feedback (HELP menu | FEEDBACK). I seriously doubt my one message will do anything; but if anyone reading this would do the same and flood them dislikes of this bug, it might get them to take notice and action.
- ctz69Copper ContributorI'm having the same problem in Excel 2021. It's very annoying and interrupts my workflow.
