Insert a row

Hello,

I want to insert a row in Excel to shift the existing data downward, but an error message prevents me from doing so, stating that non-empty cells would be pushed off the edge of the worksheet. Could you please tell me how to insert this row without deleting my existing data?

thank you !

That error usually shows up when Excel thinks the sheet is “used” much farther down than your real data.

The first thing I’d check is Ctrl+End. If it jumps way below your actual table, Excel is probably seeing old content or formatting down there.

What normally fixes it for me is:

    1. Go to the first completely unused row under your real data and select all rows below it.

    2. Do the same for unused columns to the right.

    3. Home > Clear > Clear All

    4. Save, close, and reopen the workbook

    5. Then try inserting the row again

If your data is inside an Excel Table, try inserting a Table Row instead of a full sheet row.

If you want, send a screenshot of where Ctrl+End lands. That usually tells the story pretty quickly.
