The error message you are encountering while trying to add the Solver add-in in Excel 365 suggests that Excel is having trouble accessing or locating the Solver.xlam file, which is an add-in file required for Solver to function properly. To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:
- Ensure Solver Add-In is Installed: First, make sure that the Solver Add-In is installed on your system. Solver is not included in Excel by default, and you may need to install it separately. Here's how:
- Go to "File" > "Options."
- In the Excel Options dialog, select "Add-Ins" on the left.
- In the Manage box, ensure "Excel Add-ins" is selected, and click "Go."
- Check the "Solver Add-in" option, and click "OK" to install it.
- Reinstall Solver: If the Solver Add-In is already installed and you're still encountering the error, you can try reinstalling it. Uninstall Solver first, then reinstall it following the steps above.
- Solver Add-In Location: Ensure the Solver.xlam file is located in the correct folder. By default, this file should be located in the Excel Add-Ins folder. You can check the file location and move it if necessary:
- Locate the Solver.xlam file (usually in the path C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\Library\SOLVER).
- Move the Solver.xlam file to your Excel Add-Ins folder. You can usually find this folder at C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns. If the Add-Ins folder doesn't exist, you can create it.
- Run Excel as an Administrator: Sometimes, permission issues can prevent Excel from accessing certain files. Try running Excel as an administrator by right-clicking the Excel icon and selecting "Run as administrator." Then, attempt to add the Solver Add-In.
- Check File Read-Only Status: Ensure that the Solver.xlam file is not set to "Read-Only." Right-click the file, go to "Properties," and uncheck the "Read-only" attribute if it's selected.
- Reinstall Excel: If none of the above steps work, you can consider repairing or reinstalling Microsoft Office or Excel. Be sure to back up your important documents before attempting this.
After trying these steps, you should be able to add the Solver Add-In to Excel without encountering the "Microsoft Excel cannot access the file solver.xlam" error.
