How can I label the X-axis of the graph, using numbers that I choose, rather than the 1, 2, 3 that are given?
Click anywhere on the chart.
On the Chart Design tab of the ribbon, click Select Data.
For a XY Scatter chart, select a series, then click Edit. Clear the x-values box, then point to the range containing the x-values that you want to use.
For other chart types, click Edit under 'Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels', clear the box, then point to the range containing the x-values that you want to use.

Thanks very much. BUT: when I click anywhere on the chart, no CHART DESIGN tab comes up on the ribbon on the top, so I can't "Select Data".

Which version of Excel are you using?

I am using Desktop for Windows.
The ribbon looks like this:
