Formulas Not Calculating in Workbook

This "failure to calculate" pertains to a downloaded Excel-formatted end-of-year record of credits & debits from a credit card company (Discover). Although they appeared to be "general" format two-decimal place numbers, they would not work inside an Excel function. After much fiddling around, I discovered that there was an invisible character (or two) before each number that had to be eliminated for them to be read by an Excel function.
