Formulae in Excel Resolving as a Static Value

In an excel sheet I have been attempting to use the COUNTIF formula to count instances of something appearing within a range, however, after typing the formula into the cell and hitting enter, the value changes to a static result, equal to the result of the forumla. Let me show you an example of one of the formulae I am attempting to use:

=COUNTIF(D3:D12, "Self")

Self explanatory it searches those cells for each time Self shows up and adds one to the result. Self shows up two times in that range, but the cell that I type that formula into defaults to the value 2, as a static value and discards the rest of the formula. The formula doesn't stay within the cell.

I have discovered what the problem was.

If anyone is curious, the tab where I was attempting to use formulae had code in it (when you right click on the tab at the bottom of the screen, in the View Code option, it will bring up the code). This code was causing the above problem.

    Thanks.
