Excel File Views/Usage

Is there a way to track the number views/report usage for an excel file?  Note: the file is stored on a server and not SharePoint.   I found the Add-in feature for View Version History but that will only provide saved versions and not views.   We are trying to access some resourcing for our team reports.   Any pro tips would be appreciated!!
