Error bars
This may be a stupid question, but I have some trouble with the error bars function in my excel document.
I have a bar chart that shows the average value of 12 different categories. All of these catergories have a minimum value, and a maximum value. I now have to mark with a horizontal line at the points where the minimum and maximum values are for each one of categories. When I try to do this with the error bars function, it always shows a much higher value than the actual maximum, and a lower value than the actual minimum value.
I was wondering if there is an easier way to get these horizontal lines in place, or if using error bar is completely wrong?
FYI; im using a Macbook Air

It sounds like you're trying to add horizontal lines to your bar chart to represent the minimum and maximum values for each of the 12 categories, and you're encountering issues with the error bars. To add these horizontal lines accurately, you can use the following approach:
- Create a Data Series:
- You can create two additional data series in your Excel worksheet to represent the minimum and maximum values for each category.
- Horizontal Line Chart:
- Select the data for your minimum and maximum values for all 12 categories.
- Insert a Line Chart:
- Create a line chart using the selected data.
- Position Lines:
- Adjust the line chart so that it aligns with your bar chart. This line chart will represent the minimum and maximum values for each category.
- Remove Additional Elements:
- Customize the line chart as needed. You may want to remove gridlines, labels, and other chart elements to make it more visually aligned with your bar chart.
Here are the general steps in detail:
- In your Excel worksheet, you might have a table with columns for categories, average values, minimum values, and maximum values.
- Create a separate table where you calculate the minimum and maximum values for each category.
- Select the data for the minimum and maximum values for all 12 categories, including category labels.
- Go to the "Insert" tab on the Excel ribbon.
- In the "Charts" group, choose "Line" and select the line chart style you prefer (e.g., "Line with Markers").
- Position the line chart so that it aligns with your bar chart. Adjust the axes as needed.
- Customize the line chart's appearance by removing or hiding any elements you don't need.
This approach should allow you to add horizontal lines that accurately represent the minimum and maximum values for each category on your bar chart. It provides more control and precision than using error bars for this purpose. The text was created with the help of AI.
