enlarging a cell

I am creating a new excel page and I cant use the format to widen a cell. What am I doing wrong?

If you are unable to widen a cell using the standard methods in Excel, there might be a couple of reasons why this is happening:

  1. Merged Cells: Check if the cell you're trying to widen is part of a merged cell group. Merged cells cannot be resized individually. You would need to unmerge the cells first by selecting the merged cell and then clicking "Merge & Center" button in the "Alignment" group on the "Home" tab.
  2. Locked Cells: The worksheet or specific cells might be locked. If cells are locked, you can't resize them until you unlock them. You can check if the worksheet or cells are locked by going to "Review" > "Protect Sheet" and ensuring that the "Format cells" option is checked.
  3. Protection: If the worksheet is protected, you may need to unprotect it first to make changes to cell sizes. Go to "Review" > "Protect Sheet" and enter the password if required.
  4. Zoom Level: Check the zoom level of your worksheet. If the zoom level is too high, it might make cells appear larger than they actually are, which can give the impression that you can't resize them.
  5. Compatibility Mode: If you're working with an older Excel file format (.xls), it might be limited in functionality. Save the file in the newer format (.xlsx) to access all the features.
  6. If you use  Excel Online: Excel Online does support basic cell resizing, so far I know. However, the options and features might be more limited compared to the desktop version.

To resize a cell in Excel Online, you can try clicking and dragging the border of the cell to adjust its size. If you are having trouble with that, you might want to try accessing the file in the desktop version of Excel for more advanced formatting options.
