Circular Reference warning, when there is none

I have a circular reference error message referencing a sheet that is no longer part of the current worksheet. The worksheet has been modified extensively by several users. I tracked the reference using the formula error tracing function but the cell referenced is on the sheet that is no longer part of the worksheet. The worksheet has no active links. how do I get rid of the error message and reference to this cell that doesn't exist?
